This storytelling project was one of my favorites! This postcard inspired project uses a quote from Walt Whitman.
For a class we had to redesign a book we’ve read. I chose “The Road Back to You” by Ian Morgan Cron & Suzanne Stabile. This book is about the personality test Enneagram.
My Christmas break project was refurbishing a hutch. I love painting furniture and was excited to take on a new project! It came with a few problems along the way, but nothing I couldn’t fix!
I got to take some amazing classes at UNI, but one of my favorites was printmaking. It was a class that challenged my creativity a lot. I had the opportunity to learn how to etch, woodcut and screen-printing.
A Graphic Design II project for a magazine. This project was one of my favorites. I love doing magazine spreads. I took the article from Rachel Paul, she is a registered dietician.
The 2021 Fall Career Fair Guide came out on September 20th. Each semester the Career Services at UNI host a career fair. The Northern Iowan publishes a guide to help students navigate.
I created a tabling ad for the Northern Iowan. It was intended to be handed out when we go to Student Organization Fairs.
The Northern Iowan needed some new press badges. These will be used for our writers and photographers. We also needed new branding signs, we put these on our newspaper kiosks.
My sister and brother-in-law bought a house in 2020, and I wanted to give them a house-warming gift. So I decided to give them a drawing of their house! It also includes their 2 cute cats – Cleo and Ace.
My favorite place is UNI’s campus. The 3 years I will spend on campus are/were my favorite. I made some sketches so I could remember. I’ve always wanted to create a one-line drawing and really tried to do that with these.
Our final project for Graphic Design II was to combine everything we learned from each project and put them in one project. For me, I learned a lot in this class, whether it was in InDesign, Illustrator, or Photoshop.

For this issue I was tasked with making a cover. Our fall career fair guide is usually a pop-culture reference and who doesn’t love friends?
Another one of my favorite projects was for my friends Lydia and Keegan! I met Lydia at UNI she was my connection group leader at the Salt Company. She was so sweet and was a great friend. Keegan and Lydia were one of the unfortunate couples to get married in 2020.
I met Abby about 2 years ago at a campus ministry at UNI. We were both going to the Salt Company and ended up in the same connection group. Along with her bestie Hannah we ended up living together the next school year. We became very good friends and later when Abby got engaged asked us to be in her wedding!
This was a really fun project for me. I love creating things for my friends! Noah + Anna met at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, California. But before the 2 of them met, I met Anna. We met the first day of freshman year in High School, we were random locker buddies.
Well, let me introduce myself! My name is Karla DeBruin, I grew up in a small town in Iowa. I am finishing my last year at the University of Northern Iowan! I will be graduating May 2022, and will be looking for a graphic design in Des Moines.
